Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Founded in the 1950s by the Venerable Yuet Kai, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is a unique Buddhist complex managed by laypeople. Despite its name, it’s not a functioning monastery but a sprawling site with five temples, four pavilions, and a nine-story pagoda—housing over 13,000 Buddha statues in various poses and expressions.

The uphill path is lined with hundreds of golden Arhat statues, each distinct and full of character. After climbing more than 400 steps, visitors reach the main hall, where thousands of miniature Buddhas cover the walls. At its center rests the lacquered body of Yuet Kai, preserved in a meditative pose.

Other highlights include the Kwan Yin Hall, Jade Emperor Hall, and the pagoda, which offers panoramic views of Sha Tin. With its blend of spiritual artistry, lush surroundings, and cultural depth, this hillside sanctuary invites quiet reflection and wonder.
