Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences

Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences

Located at 2 Caine Lane in Mid-Levels, the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences occupies the former Bacteriological Institute, established in 1906 to combat the plague. This Edwardian-style red-brick building, now a declared monument, blends Chinese and Western architectural elements and holds deep historical significance.

Opened in 1996, the museum features 11 themed galleries covering topics such as local medical history, public health, Western and Chinese medicine, epidemic control (including plague and SARS), herbal medicine, and vintage medical tools. Exhibits include early vaccine equipment, anatomical specimens, foot-binding shoes, and recreated clinic scenes—offering a vivid look into the evolution of healthcare in Hong Kong.

Beyond exhibitions, the museum offers interactive zones, a lecture hall, and a herbal garden, making it a thoughtful space for learning and reflection. It’s a place where science, culture, and community health come together in meaningful ways.
