Tai O
Tai O is a historic fishing village on the northwest coast of Lantau Island, known for its stilt houses built above tidal flats. Often called the “Venice of the East,” it’s a rare glimpse into Hong Kong’s past, where narrow lanes, shrimp paste shops, and drying seafood evoke a slower, saltier way of life.
The village is rich in cultural traditions, including the annual Dragon Boat Water Parade—an intangible cultural heritage event. Landmarks like the Tai O Heritage Hotel (a former police station), Tin Hau Temple, and Kwan Tai Temple reflect the area’s layered history.
Visitors can take boat rides through the canals to admire the stilt houses and possibly spot Chinese white dolphins. Coastal trails and the Fu Shan Viewing Point offer sweeping views of the village and sunset over the bay.
