Monster Building
The Monster Building is a nickname for a cluster of five interconnected residential blocks in Quarry Bay—Yick Cheong, Yick Fat, Fook Cheong, Montane Mansion, and Oceanic Mansion. Built in the 1960s, the complex houses over 2,200 units and around 10,000 residents, forming one of the most iconic examples of Hong Kong’s vertical living.
Its nickname comes from the overwhelming density and symmetry of the buildings. Looking up from the courtyard reveals towering walls of windows enclosing a narrow slice of sky—a scene that has captivated photographers and filmmakers alike. It’s been featured in movies like Transformers: Age of Extinction and Ghost in the Shell.
While it’s a popular photo spot, it’s also a private residential area. Visitors are urged to be respectful—keep noise down, avoid photographing windows, and treat the space with care. It’s a place to quietly observe the beauty and complexity of urban life.
